DESCRIPTION OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE WORKSHOPS (영어 워크샾 설명)

1. INTRODUCTION TO EAL   (EAL 소개)

The introductory workshop deals with some of the key issues in adult EAL learning. It examines
characteristics of adult learners, the settlement process, cultural diversity, language diversity, and the
different roles of EAL volunteers. It is highly recommended for all volunteers working with adult
immigrants.

2. CANADIAN LANGUAGE BENCHMARKS (캐나다 언어 수준측정)

Volunteers will be introduced to Canadian Language Benchmarks. You will view a video of speaking
situations at the different benchmark levels. You will learn how learners are assessed for their
benchmark levels. This is also an opportunity to learn more about the gradual acquisition of English.

3. LISTENING & SPEAKING (듣기와 말하기)

How do we get students talking, and how do we help them improve their oral skills? We will explore
methods for teaching and practising listening and speaking. Participants will look at activities and “play”
games that work in the classroom. It includes valuable tips for anyone working as a facilitator, a
facilitator’s assistant, tutor or language partner.

4. CONVERSATION CIRCLES(회화 고리)

Conversation groups are often hard to plan because of their flexible nature. They are multi-level and
multi-ethnic, and often drop-ins are welcome. Learn some strategies for facilitating these groups in a
way that maximizes listening and speaking time.

5. READING & WRITING (읽기와 쓰기)

During this workshop, we will look at how adults learn to read and write in a second language. It also
provides practical approaches to teaching reading and writing to learners with a wide range of literacy
skills. Differences between native and non-native literacy will be discussed.

6. LANGUAGE & CULTURE (언어와 문화)

Learning a new language is more than learning grammar and vocabulary. How we communicate with
each other is strongly influenced by our culture. Greeting people, shaking hands, opening and closing a
conversation, handing something to another person, choosing a colour - all these things (and more!) are
influenced by culture.

7. ASSISTING LOW-LEVEL LITERACY LEARNERS (낮은 단계의 학습자 지원)

Learn from an experienced literacy instructor where and how to begin teaching literacy to learners who
have no previous experience with reading and writing. Volunteers play an important role working one-
on-one assisting learners during the earliest stages of English language learning.

8. COMPUTER-ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING (CALL) (컴퓨터지원 언어 학습)

The Internet is a vast resource for EAL students and teachers. You will be introduced to some of the EAL
programs and websites that can be used to enhance the teaching of settlement topics, grammar, and
reading. This workshop is delivered in a computer lab and participants should have basic computer skills.
