태권도대회 참가후 귀향때 교통사고로 부모 잃어

지난 토요일 오전에 2주전 서스캐처원주(Saskatchewan)에서 있었던 태권도대회(taekwondo tournament)에 참가후 위니펙으로 돌아오다 교통사고로 숨진 마르셀(Marcel)과 브렌다(Brenda) 부부의 장례식이 있었습니다.

마르셀(Marcel)과 브렌다(Brenda) 부부는 5명의 아들을 뒀으며 아들들을 모두 태권도 유단자로 키웠습니다. 사고 당시 맏아들은 위니펙에 혼자 남았고 부부는 나머지 4명의 아들들을 데리고 서스캐처원주(Saskatchewan)의 한 도시에서 있은 태권도 대회에 참가를 했다가 대회후 위니펙으로 돌아오는 중 욕튼(Yorkton)에서 남쪽으로 24km 떨어진 16번 고속도로에서 17세 여성이 몰던 다른 차와 부딪치면서 부부와 다른 차의 운전자는 그 자리에서 숨지고 아들 4명은 부상을 당했습니다. 당시 위니펙에서 태권도 대회에 참가했던 사람들은 약 3-40여명으로 함께 위니펙으로 함께 줄을 지어 돌아오던 중이었는데 사고로 오던 길을 되돌아 대회를 주관했던 태권도장에서 며칠동안 머물었습니다.

지난 토요일 빅토리아 여관(Victoria Inn)에서 열린 장례식후에 위니펙에 머물어 혼자 사고에서 무사했던 맏아들 조단(Jordan Dubois, 19세)는 그의 부모는 최고의 자랑스러운 부모였으며 아들 5명을 위해 그들의 인생을 헌신했다고 회상했습니다.

부상으로 부터 회복된 3명의 그의 형제 마이클(Michael), 매튜(Matthew) 그리고 더스틴(Dustin)도 장례식에 참가했으나 아직 그의 형제 자렛(Jarret)은 위니펙병원에 중상으로 남아 있으며 의사는 가족들에게 그는 허리이하가 마비될 것 같다고 말했습니다.

조단(Jordan)은 장례식에 꽤 많은 사람이 올 줄 예상했는데 참석자가 800명이나 될 줄은 몰랐다고 말했습니다. 그는 그의 부모가 지역사회에서 꽤 인기가 있었지만 이렇게 많은 사람이 올 줄은 몰랐다고, 놀라운 일이라고 말했습니다.

FIVE Winnipeg boys were orphaned after a crash on a highway in eastern Saskatchewan Sunday morning that sent four of them to hospital, two of them with serious injuries.

Marcel and Brenda Dubois, both 38, were pronounced dead at the scene after a westbound car collided with their eastbound minivan while attempting to pass another vehicle on Hwy 16, near the community of Saltcoats.

Two of their five sons, a 15-year-old and a 13-year-old, were airlifted to a Regina hospital in critical condition. Two others, a 16-year-old and a nine-year-old, were taken to a Yorkton hospital for treatment.

The collision occurred as the family was returning from a taekwondo tournament in Yorkton. A fifth son, 19, did not make the trip and stayed behind in Winnipeg.

The Dubois family has been a mainstay at Iron Fist Tae Kwon Do for the past three years. Coreen Goodchild, head instructor at Iron Fist, said the Dubois boys were "absolutely fabulous" and their parents were devoted to both them and to their sport.

"They donated time, they did fundraising. They were absolutely devoted to the family and for their family succeeding in this sport," she said.

Goodchild said Iron Fist is setting up a trust account for the five boys, likely at Scotiabank, and is accepting donations at its location at 675 Archibald Street. Plans are also underway to host a fundraiser, likely in a month or two.

"When you lose your parents, you lose your income," she said.

Saltcoats is approximately 24 km southeast of Yorkton. The driver of the car, a 17-year-old woman from Yorkton, also died at the scene.

Wayne Mitchell, master instructor at Kees Taekwondo, which hosted the weekend tournament, said the crash could have been even worse as a vehicle carrying four other competitors was following the Dubois family and clipped their minivan after the initial impact and ended up in the ditch.

He said between 30 and 40 people from Winnipeg have returned to Yorkton after the crash to spend time with the injured and mourn the loss of the Dubois parents.

"Everybody has been stepping up to give them a place to stay," he said. "They were travelling in a convoy and they had to come back. Some of them stayed with the kids at the hospital, some of them stayed at our house and wherever we could put them up. We had mattresses put out for them at the taekwondo school."

Yorkton RCMP spokesman Cpl. Randy Wittig described the road conditions on the undivided highway at the time of the collision as "snow-covered and visibility was reduced."

He said RCMP collision analysts have attended the scene and the crash is under investigation.

Wittig said it was a horrendous weekend on Saskatchewan's roadways, with a total of 10 people dying in three separate accidents.
