POINTS OF INTEREST:
In the 1800s, thousands of Voyageurs from the North West Company transported furs and goods between Montreal and Canada’s West in bark canoes over several months. Thanks to Indigenous customs, a large number of these Voyageurs built stable families. As a result, a traditional Indigenous food called Pemmican, became the Voyageurs’ main food source consisting of 40% of dried bison meat and some dried fruit, crushed into a powder and mixed with 60% of bison fat.
Fort Gibraltar was built in 1810 and destroyed in 1816 during the Battle of Seven Oaks. A resolution was reach in 1821, merging the Hudson Bay Company with the North West Company, and renamed the area to Fort Garry.
Along the Red River, merges the Seine River, which flows along Lagimodière-Gaboury Park. This was gifted to Jean-Baptiste Lagimodière by Lord Selkirk in appreciation for his efforts in preventing hostilities during the Battle of Seven Oaks. This became the birthplace of their grandson Louis Riel, founder of the Province of Manitoba.
Le Festival du Voyageur organization rebuilt Fort Gibraltar, previously located at The Forks, in Whittier Park for their annual winter festival at the end of the 1970s, in order to pay homage to the Voyageurs.
