On Wednesday, city council gave the green light to the Waverley underpass project with an expected construction start date early next year.

The city said a preliminary design has been completed and the design process will continue through 2016.

The total cost of the project is approximately $155 million. It will include replacement of the existing railway crossing at Waverley Street and Taylor Street with an underpass.

The city said it will reconstruct Waverley Street, as well as increase Taylor Street, between Waverley Street and Lindsay Street, to four lanes.

The city said the project will improve traffic flow, increase safety, mobility and capacity in the area.
